Bimiana and Lyra

The Aetas are one of the poorest tribes in the Philippines. Many of them live in the upland areas of Central Luzon doing hunting, gathering and planting. When Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the 90s, many Aeta families lost their homes and were forced to live in resettlement sites. They had a hard time assimilating and finding a job with the lowlanders because majority of them were illiterate.

Today, many Aeta families remain in extreme poverty. Bimiana and Laira are daughters of two Aeta farmers. They live in katutubo village in Porac Pampanga, an upland resettlement site. Bimiana and Laira are the best students in their class (Laira is 1st honor while Bimiana is 2nd honor). They are very bright kids and their dream is to finish school and prove that the Aeta tribe can survive in the hinterlands and the lowlands thru the help of education.
